In a World of Everything,Take Time to Connect With Your Students

Today, SHS said goodbye to a recent 2017 graduate. No matter what town, country, faith, or anything else that might separate us today, losses in a school community are never easy. One must see the silver lining in sadness and today the silver lining was the beautiful connections the students had to one another and to those teachers who were present.

The Takeaway...?

Take the time to connect with your students everyday. I am a large proponent of preparing students for their futures utilizing technology. I think today and this past week was a great reminder that no computer can replace the personal relationship that teachers have the ability to provide.

We spend a minimum of 1hr everyday with our students for 180 days a year for 4 years. That is 720 hours by the time they graduate. That is 720 hours where we have the ability to establish a connection and if we are lucky it then turns into more.

We rediscovered today students do take skills away from our classes what they really take away and personally remember is how we treated them.

We are someone they can talk to,
We are someone who encourages them,
We get to know them; their personality and their interests,
We teach out of love and caring and in return our students know that we are always there for them in their times of need,
We are back up "parents" and sometimes more... We matter to them almost as much as they matter to us.

The lesson, keep doing what your doing and never forget that the most creative app in the world isn't going to make much of a difference compared to asking someone how they are that day or what they did over the weekend...

With Love,
Erin
